Back-bouncing/Back-trolling
These techniques are widely used in Alaska, where the species of salmon running upriver are almost identical to those found in Kamchatka.
The concept is simple: drifting back with the current in a river can be much too fast to give fish a chance so the boat powers upstream just a little in order to slow down the backwards drift.
With the boat moving at this speed it is easier to get your bait or artificial lure down to the bottom where the salmon (especially King Salmon) are more likely to be feeding.
The standard rig for Back-bouncing is to have a weight dropping down from a triple swivel, with a longer leader going off to your hook or lure. Ball weights or tubular pencil-weights work best as these are less likely to snag on the bottom.
Back-trolling is a similar technique in which a diver (a plate or vane angled to pull your line down, but not necessarily to the bottom) is attached instead of the weight.
